Pouring into a few
Eric Geisbert (Josiah Project 13 grad) is one of the founders and the Director of Ambridge Youth Ignite.
When you think of Jesus, do you think of Him feeding the 5000, teaching at the temple, or spending time with the 12 disciples? When I think of Jesus I am confronted with the fact that he spent a lot of time with only three young guys – Peter, James and John. Mark 9:2 says, “After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and led them up a high mountain, where they were all alone. There he was transfigured before them.” Jesus poured Himself into these three men more so than anyone else He came into contact with. This inspired me to spend my own life pouring into a few, instead of seeking out the “thousands.”
This is why we have created a Mentoring Ministry through Ambridge Youth Ignite. During the summer of 2007, the Ambridge Sports and Arts Camps enriched the lives of almost 200 youth! We decided to continue our ministry throughout the school year, by focusing in on a few, those who are most responsive and hungry to grow spiritually. In January 2008, I began meeting with two young guys on a weekly basis, and we are still at it! We eat together, talk about our lives, read and discuss a chapter of the Bible, and pray for each other. Since we began meeting we have read the entire book of Nehemiah, part of Genesis and now part of the Gospel of John. Through this mentoring ministry, we want to help the youth of Ambridge delve into the Word of God every week. While some weeks are better than others, it has been really encouraging that the youth have felt comfortable asking questions as we attempt to understand our God together. During one of our meetings, after we had finished reading the chapter for that week, one of the youth eagerly asked, “Can we keep going?” That was music to my ears!
In September three new leaders joined the Mentoring Ministry of AYI, and two new youth! We hope to continue to grow so that we have more leaders who can mentor youth one-on-one. As we head forward we also want to work with these youth outside of the Mentoring Meetings. One way we are creating a space to do this is by starting the Ambridge Area Lacrosse team. Each of the youth in the Mentoring Ministry wants to be part of a team and loved learning lacrosse during their summers at the Ambridge Sports Camp. Through generous donations, we will start up the Lacrosse team this coming spring!
