On the Road

We last left our adventurers at Ridgecrest...find out how their journey continues!

After Youth Quake the only schedule place we had to be in the following week was a meeting with Bishop Gadsden.  Therefore, Whis pieced together the places we needed to go and the people we needed to meet.  We averaged about 3 hours in the car a day, and met a ton of awesome people doing God's work.  Hearing about the different ministries and outreaches the campus ministries and RTW alumni were up to inspired me.  The willingness we found in different ministries to partner up and work alongside of us to make impact for God was hands down the most encouraging and outstanding theme I encountered.  We prayed with each individual we met with and experienced some sound times of communing with God and the Body.

If you don’t know anything about Myers-Briggs Personality Types, it is this test on personality preferences that describes personalities using four spectrums (Extraverted—Introverted, iNtuition—Sensing, Feeling—Thinking, and Perceiving—Judging).  The combination of one letter from each of the four spectrums constitutes a personality preference.  For example, an ENFP is known to be very creative and extremely gregarious but at times hopelessly disorganized with a strong aversion to planning.  I am an ENFP.  Whis too is an ENFP.  This being the case, we were great at working the booth together and meeting with tons of people, but besides one meeting with Bishop Gadsden in South Carolina on Thursday in the week and a half between Youth Quake and the AMIA Winter Conference there was little resembling a planned itinerary.

We decided to hang around in Asheville one more night to figure out a game plan.  And by that I mean find a place to watch the Stillers take down the Baltimore Ravens to solidify they’re spot in the Super Bowl.  On Monday we covered Asheville coffee shops and bookstores with flyers for re:mix.  After a stop off at Montreat College, where we were amazingly able to meet with Tom Oxenrider despite it being MLK Jr. Day, we trekked the six some hours across North Carolina to Durham.

Whis for about week had been trying to connect with Jimmy Long, Regional Director of South East for Intervarsity.  Without having previously spoken to Jimmy and no direct avenue to get a hold of him, Whis was able to arrange a meeting with him in Durham!  Either God ordained the meeting or Whis, having a bit more experience as an ENFP than me, has become very good at pulling things off at the last moment.  Personally, I think it’s a little bit of both.  Nevertheless, this definitely set the tone for the following week of traveling and at times miraculous meetings—whether finding out the day before where we’d crash the next evening or getting together with people under the bizarrest of circumstances.

"excellent Adventure" - Jen's Take One

YouthQuake, Ridgecrest, NC

The first stop of the trip was YouthQuake, Act 29’s youth conference at Ridgecrest Conference Center near Asheville North Carolina.  Arriving roughly eight hours after our departure from Pittsburgh, we made it in pretty good time—and succeeded in not melting down or getting on each other’s nerves.

As we pulled in to the parking lot to unload the Rock the World exhibition booth we nearly ran over a familiar group.  The Hellrung clan, trekked all the way from Illinois to be apart of the servant team for the conference.  Any anxiety I had about knowing only Whis or having never been to Youth Quake before disappeared when I saw them.  Further friends we reconnected with were Steven Tighe , who also came to serve and to help set up the Prayer Tabernacle, and Dixon Kinser (www.dixonkinser.blogspot.com), who graced the stage as the MC. And Acts 29 (http://www.a29.com/) gave us stage time to tell people about re:mix!

Since I only graduated a month ago from undergrad, I gravitated towards hanging out with the other college students.  They traveled from Illinois, Georgia, and Florida to to love on the participants by praying for the them, run the prayer tabernacle, count t-shirts, and wear ridiculous costumes, like Crawdad Jack which consisted of neon orange over-alls decorated with stuffed animal lobsters and topped with a straw hat.  It was a blast getting to know these students, hanging out, praying with them, and telling them a bit about Josiah Project as well as remix.

Two particularly powerful moments of the weekend were my praying with Amanda and the Saturday night talk that Jonathan Hansen gave.  From Thursday night on, the servant team had been praying a theme of healing for the participants.  Again and Again the Spirit led us to this.

On Saturday Afternoon when Amanda was praying in the Prayer Tabernacle, she discovered a prayer request someone had written left on the table.  She was so moved by it she began to cry, though anyone who knows Amanda knows this is not a common occurrence.  Meanwhile, I was returning from an afternoon nap when I ran into Amanda.  We prayed together for the person who wrote the request.  While praying, I saw an image of Amanda in a veil, similar to a wedding veil and like the one Moses wore after he had been in God’s presence.  The image revealed that Amanda was feeling the heart of God for this person.

Later that evening, Jonathan shared a story about how over two years God used him and his community of friends in college to lead a woman to Christ, who was a stripper and had considered suicide.  We prayed for healing of the students and God showed up in awesome ways.

Whis & Jen's Excellent Adventure

Jan 14 2009

Whis - Jen EE1

Jen and I are poised to launch out on a nearly three-week road trip across the Southeast US to campuses, coffeeshops, and conferences. We hope to put re:mix onto people's radar screens like a blimp over Baghdad. I allegedly run Rock the World, and Jen runs Rock the World's Josiah Project.  Jen claims I'm a 20-year-old trapped in a 58 year old body. She also claims she's "22." I want to see her I.D.

Three week road trip -- it's pretty likely that we will end up ready to buy chain saws to dice each other and end the misery or else appreciating one another more deeply. Maybe some of both. We're also going to be hanging with a lot of other people along the way -- people we stay with or run into (with the car or not). And we're going to hang with God daily. Hm. Well, all our time is spent with God... I mean, is there such a thing as a time when He's not there? But I mean being intentional about it, like the way Jesus kept going off by himself to pray.

We are going to roll from Pittsburgh tomorrow -- Thursday Jan 15 -- at ick-o'clock in the morning. Gotta be in NC by 5 that evening for Acts 29's YouthQuake conference. So Jen is spending the night at our place (my wife's name is Mary) b/c that way we can absorb coffee, ooze into the car and blast off.

Along the way I hope we'll have some God stories to tell about things that He sets up and does. We'll also be posting pix and vids of people and places, all framed in the semi-crazed daze of being our road-raving selves. Here it comes.

The Shanes: Down to earth & Worshipful

Last week, I got to be "sound girl" at an interview shoot at the studio of Shane & Shane in Dallas! It was so much fun. It's always cool to meet someone kind of famous, but what really blessed me was how down-to-earth these guys were. As our little team of folks set up the cameras and lights, they even helped us out a few times, getting us necessary tools and stuff. No high-brow snootiness here. Just a couple a fun guys who have an amazing gift. Shane Barnard, Meredith Borel, Amir Bayati, Shane Everett

They joked around with us, and even agreed to let Amir, our on-screen interviewer, play violin with them at the re:mix conference in March! Maybe they were just being nice - but they won't regret it. Amir's a pretty awesome violinist.

My favorite part of our afternoon with Shane B and Shane E was when they played a few different songs for us. From the first chord, their eyes were closed all the way through as they sang straight to God. Even though I had to remain a statue since I was holding the microphone, I closed my eyes and worshipped along with them. I could totally sense the presence of God! And I can tell already that it's going to be a huge blessing to worship with them at re:mix 09.
