October 2009

All the grads we feature in Mission Link's "Where Are We Now" series are truly important to Rock the World and our mission to multiply young Christian leaders. This month's entry deserves a special introduction for a special reason: Meredith Borel recently passed a milestone, serving with Rock the World for more than 10 years. That's just over half of Rock the World's 20-year existence.

Meredith's remarkable achievements in that span include launching our re:mix conference series, executing numerous short-term missions, translating our youth ministry training materials into Spanish, leading Josiah Project, overseeing communications, hiring and supervising staff, surviving a war in Lebanon (no joke), and, worst of all, putting up with me (no small task)! Most recently she's developed and taught "Loving Muslims to Jesus," a seminar now available for churches and campus ministries. She even ran our entire ministry one year while I was on sabbatical. She's also achieved broad recognition for her labors: she has recently been selected as a representative to the upcoming 3rd Lausanne Conference on World Evangelization, a rare honor.

Perhaps her two most significant contributions to Rock the World have been the way she's led us into much greater engagement with the Great Commission beyond the US, and the way God has moved through her to release His life, love, joy and wisdom into the lives of trainees, staff members, board members, and those who hadn't yet known Jesus. For the many young lives changed through her ministry, we truly give thanks to God.

In Him,
Whis Hays

Q: What are you currently doing in ministry?
A: As a Rock the World staffer I help young people encounter God and explore a call to Global Missions through the re:mix conferences that I spearhead. I am also mentoring 3 amazing young adults in the Epicenter program, Robert Park, Jillian McVicker, and Amanda Hellrung. Through my work with All Nations, I am training future missionaries to learn how to share the story of Jesus in contextualized ways, so that every tribe, tongue and nation can hear about his love!

Q: What is the most exciting thing God is doing in your life & ministry right now?
A: I am exploring the next steps in pursuing my long-term calling to Muslims! I have a dream to instigate an indigenous movement of Jesus-followers in the Muslim world. I picture hundreds of thousands - even millions - of Muslims falling in love with Jesus and sharing Him within their own family and friend networks through multiplying simple churches. Now the question is, how to land in the exact spot of God's chosen ignition point?

Q: What challenges do you face in your ministry right now?
A: A lot of the mission work that I do requires extra funds to be raised to cover travel and living expenses. One of my challenges is looking to God for provision, and listening to Him for a strategy to invite others to partner with me in my ministry.

Q: Do you have any recent stories of God transforming a young person's life in a radical way?
A: This past August, I led a Rock the World
team to put on a conference in SE Asia for 60 teenage missionaries who are serving God across the Muslim world.  One of the most encouraging moments of the conference for me came as I was teaching a workshop to the teens about the "Kingdom Circles." This is a simple method of starting spiritual conversations with Muslim friends, and beginning to point them to Jesus. I had mentioned to some at the parallel adult conference that I would be teaching this, and they thought it might be "over the teens' heads." In the course of the week, I discovered that two of the teens already knew the Kingdom Circles, so I asked them to help me teach the workshop. It was SO encouraging to hear "Brent," age 17, and "Jane," age 16, share with their peers how they had used the Kingdom Circles in North Africa and Indonesia, and seen their Muslim teenage friends become really curious about Jesus and even begin to follow Him as a result! The other teens in the workshop got very excited and emboldened to have this new tool to take back home and use to share Jesus with their Muslim friends as well. I am so excited for the domino effect that both this workshop and the entire conference will have for furthering the Kingdom of God!

Q: What specific training from Rock the World are you applying to your current ministry?

A: Rock the World taught me to dream big for God. That's what I continue to do today, and that's why I dream of reaching Muslims: not just a few, but starting a movement to reach millions! RTW also taught me to value people, and continually give them chances to use their gifts and talents for God. That's the main way I still lead today - not by doing it all myself, but by making space and opportunity for others to take initiative for the Kingdom!
